The Steven M. Lewis Student Achievement Scholarship supports graduating high school students from eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey who have successfully completed the Student Assistance Program (SAP) or Intervention and Referral Services (NJ) while in high school, and have been accepted by an accredited college, university, or technical school for post-secondary studies.
The scholarship is funded through donations from US Restaurants, Inc. of Blue Bell, PA. and is administered by Project CARE. Through the dedication of its President, Steven M. Lewis, and the enthusiasm of his staff, US Restaurants, Inc. has raised millions of dollars for Project CARE since the 1980's.
Supporting Student Achievement
US Restaurants, Inc. has been a driving force behind Project CARE since its founding in 1985.
US Restaurants, Inc. , a franchisee of Burger King, owns and operates all Burger King restaurants in Bucks and Montgomery counties. The company also operates Ponderosa and East Side Marioís restaurants throughout the area and is an integral part of the respective communities. US Restaurants, Inc. has dedicated its corporate giving and fundraising efforts to support and enable Project CARE to offer a wide variety of training programs including SAP Training.
US Restaurants also initiated the Project CARE Annual Golf Outing, an event that gives the community an opportunity to show its support for Project CARE.

A Tradition of Giving
The scholarship program was established in 1997 at the Project CARE Annual Award Banquet & Golf Outing. Robert Wallstein, a fellow Burger King franchisee and friend of Steven M. Lewis, challenged donors to contribute to a fund in Mr. Lewis' name. This fund continues the mission of Project CARE by supporting success in young people who had received student assistance in high school.
Since that time, over forty students from eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey have received financial support to complete post- secondary education.
Who Is Eligible?
Graduating high school seniors who have successfully completed the Student Assistance Program (SAP), after a referral for a substance abuse or related concern and plan to continue their education at an accredited college, university or technical school, are eligible. The scholarship award is $4,000 per year for a maximum of four years for a total of $16,000.
Students must have been involved in the Student Assistance Program as a result of a referral for a substance abuse or related concern. The student should also have benefited from the SAP process through successful adoption of a sober and drug-free lifestyle and through completion of recommendations resulting from that SAP process.
This year, four scholarships will be awarded to one student each from Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania and from Burlington County, New Jersey.
How Do I Apply?
Each school receives an application packet and selects one student they believe exemplifies success after having received student assistance during high school. The selected student completes the application and submits it along with three letters of recommendation and transcripts. Applications should also include a letter of acceptance from the post-secondary school, if possible.
